The Messiah College chapter of Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) will kick off this year's fundraising season with the school's first ever dance-a-thon on March 26th from 8 to 12 p.m. in the Larsen Student Union. A dance-a-thon, as featured on the popular HBO series It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, is an event where teams pay a nominal entry fee ($6-8 in this case) and endeavor to dance continuously throughout the evening. If a team ever has no members on the dance floor, they are eliminated. At the end of the evening, the last team standing gets a prize. Teams will be encouraged to sign up for CAC's culminating event, Relay for Life.

While CAC is best known for running the annual Relay for Life event, they wanted to try something different this year to draw in more teams and raise more money to support the American Cancer Society. "Relay for Life is our biggest fundraiser, so we try to do things that tie into that," says CAC Chair Becky Torres.

Money raised by Relay for Life goes to the American Cancer Society of Pennsylvania. Most of it will go to PA cancer researchers, but it also supports programs such as Live Good Feel Good which buys wigs for breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and the Hope Lodge which provides free lodging for resident patients at Hershey Medical Center.

While Torres is glad that people are getting excited about the big fundraising events, she says that students shouldn't lose sight of the monetary goal of the organization. "It's important to raise money that supports a universal cause that affects everyone," says Torres.
