In a climate where your next employer (or anyone, for that matter) may "Google" you and inevitably end up on your Facebook page, the content on your profile could cost you a job or allow a stalker to find you.

A few months ago, Facebook overhauled their privacy settings. These are the changes you need to be aware of:

• All of your pictures may be open to everyone.

o After the most recent change, depending on your previous settings, your pictures have been opened up to anyone who searches your name. Not only can they see all your albums, but they can also see all your tagged photos.
o To change this, go to Home>Account>Privacy Settings>Profile Information. Here, there is a box which determines who can see each aspect of your account. Set it accordingly. I would strongly suggest against opening personal aspects to "Everyone." Some students have 1,000+ tagged photos of themselves, which equates to a wealth of information.

• All your actions are now shown in your News Feed.

o You are not given the option to not display actions you make on the website. Any time you comment on anything, "like" anything, or post anything, it will report it to your News Feed. If you don't want your every move broadcasted onto your page, you must remove them one by one.
o There is no setting to undo this.

Here is the official release from Facebook:

"Whether we display a story on your profile is now controlled by the privacy of the content itself, rather than an additional setting. For example, only people who can see both your Wall, and the Wall to which you posted would be able to see a story about you writing on a friend's Wall. You cannot completely turn off recent activity stories anymore. However, if you want to remove a particular story that currently shows up, simply click the 'Remove' button that appears to the right of the story after you move your mouse over it."
