2008's Top 5 Emerging Artists and Top 5 "Under The Radar" Songs

Issue date: 12/11/08 Section: Entertainment
B-Sides executive Margeaux Monsour loves under-the-radar music. This senior brings around thirty concerts to Messiah in one academic school year, a task she says requires her to, "read about and listen to dozens of bands each week in an effort to learn of emerging artists and stay afloat with current news of established ones." As you will note, her expertise in lesser-known music has yielded two top 5 lists, one for artists who emerged in 2008 and another for her personal favorite songs this year.
2008's Top 5 Emerging Artists
5. Vampire Weekend
Ever since a massive summer tour, this band's popularity has gone through the roof. I mean, how many bands these days can mix punk, new wave, and classical?
4. Ndidi Onukwulu
Alas, an artist that sings correctly! The tone quality and sheer beauty of this woman's voice takes my breath away. Her bluesy tunes are unique, original, and unlike anything else out right now.
3. The Explorers Club
The men in this band appreciate the roots of music today. Their sound is extremely reminiscent of The Beach Boys, Jerry Lee Lewis, and other classic 50s artists. Their live performances are full of fun and enthusiasm as well.
2. Between the Buried and Me
Even though this band has great fame within the metal scene, it still surprises me how many people do not know them. They are some of the best musicians I have ever heard.
1. Josh Garrels
Garrels' stories of personal convictions and journey with God inspire all who listen. Not only is his spirit honest and pure, but his musical talent is enough to make you double-take.
Top 5 "Under The Radar" Songs
5. "You are the Best Thing" by Ray LaMontagne
Right from the start with the harmonizing horns and laid-back beat, Ray LaMontagne comes in with a beautiful, rustic voice that brings peace and comfort.
4. "Birds Fly Away" by Theresa Andersson
To get the full effect of this song, make sure to watch the video first. Somehow Andersson achieves the sound of a full band, but plays all the instruments herself.
3. "Canon" by ZOX
This is an amazing reggae rendition of Bach's Canon in D. Although the original song is well-known, ZOX are able to make each minute completely unpredictable.
2. "The World Should Revolve" by Little Jackie
Meet the next big deal. Little Jackie is an upbeat pop/R&B artist. Her lyrics are silly, the beat is catchy, and her sound is radio-ready.
1. "Click Click Click Click" by Bishop Allen
You can find this piano-driven folk band on the new Nick and Norah soundtrack. This particular little ditty brightens my day each time I listen to it.

If you like "Birds Fly Away" by Theresa Andersson, check out her rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" on FUNKY KIDZ. Andersson plays all of the instruments on this soulful journey to Oz. (Continued…)
