The clubs, organizations, and programs at Messiah that are dearest to me are those that encourage student activism. I would argue these establishments are those that best help the college to realize its mission of preparing students for "service, leadership, and reconciliation," and are also those that most clearly respond to the teachings of Jesus. As many have seen and heard, there has been plenty of conversation through the Swinging Bridge and word of mouth that changes are happening with the South Side Café (SSC). The Student Government Association (SGA) is grateful for the opportunity to clarify some of the information that you have been given which may not have been completely accurate. (1) comment
On our website and through email and even in personal discussions, we at The Swinging Bridge have received many thoughtful responses to the article "Student Claims Racial Profiling by Public Safety Officer." Our hope with the article was to both to inform students about what happened and to encourage dialogue throughout campus, and we are happy that both seem to be results of its publication. I can only think, after reading this article, how it is incredibly unfortunate that this article would ever appear in Messiah's newspaper. The MOST unfortunate thing, however, is not the topic, or the proposed racism, but the incredibly one-sided, unfair, and outright unkind way in which this article was written. (1) comment
Allow me to issue a brief disclaimer before I say anything else in this article: I am an extreme hypocrite. There, it's out there, once and for all. It's true that from time to time I engage in some of the activities I'm about to ridicule. But the fact that I do these things doesn't eliminate the need for someone to say how stupid they can be.
